How long is the pre-licensing program for real estate associates?
For Online Delivery:

  • The Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA) offers the Introduction to a Career in Real Estate online information session on becoming a real estate associate in Alberta. Please click here for more information and to register.
  • Fundamentals of Real Estate (Phase 2) available through RECA as of May 1, 2013 must be completed before moving on to Phase 3: Areas of Practice.
    • If you are completing Phase 2 through AREA, you must complete the four assignments, the interactive course called Environmental Issues and the final exam before moving onto Phase 3 Areas of Practice.
  • Areas of Practice (Phase 3) contains 3 sections: Residential, Commercial and Rural. Each section has assignments and a final exam and can be completed in any order. It is recommended that Areas of Practice be completed within 12 months of the registration date in the first section.

For Classroom Delivery:

  • Phase 3: Areas of Practice is approximately six weeks long, including several days for writing exams.

NOTE: You MUST complete Fundamentals of Real Estate and Areas of Practice within 18 months of your Fundamentals of Real Estate registration date.

What if I don't have a credit card for paying online?
We still require you to register online through our registration system, however we will accept payment by bank draft, money order or cheque. Your registration will be completed upon receipt of your payment.
What are the prerequisites for enrolling in REAP?
The documents to meet the eligibility requirements must be submitted to the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA). Click here to learn about the program prerequisites and equivalencies.
I registered and paid for a Phase 3 online course. Why can I not access it?
The AREA office will complete your registration the next business day and will mail any course materials at that time. If the course has an online component, you will receive an e-mail from registration@areahub.ca noting your AREA ID and password.
Does each section in Phase 3 of the pre-licensing program for real estate associates have a final exam or will there be one final exam?
Each section is followed by a final exam.
Who do I contact to arrange my Phase 3 exam?
Contact your local exam centre.
What happens if I fail my Phase 3 exam?
You are given two opportunities to write and pass an AREA exam. A passing mark of 70% is required. If you write your first exam and fail, you will receive a Permission to Re-Write by e-mail the next business day.
What happens if I fail both of my exams?
You are required to retake the course which you can do either online or in the classroom. If you choose the online option, you will receive a reducation in the course fee issued after payment is received.
Can I receive a receipt for income tax purposes for the online and distance delivery courses I've taken through AREA?
As of January 1, 2011, AREA is certified as an accredited education institution. Upon a student's request AREA will issue a tuition certificate for Income Tax purposes within two business days of the request. The online form to request your Tuition Certificate can be found here. Certificates are only issued for the REAP online and Brokers Program distance delivery options. Professional development courses are not eligible.
How do I apply for my real estate licence?
The Real Estate Council of Alberta handles all aspects of licensing in Alberta.
Can a REALTOR® from another province work in Alberta?
The Real Estate Council of Alberta has agreements with a number of Canadian provinces and some US locations. If an agreement is in place with your current location, you may be exempt from some educational requirements. Click on the link for more information.
After completing the pre-licensing program, how long do I have to get my real estate associate's license?
You must apply for your real estate licence within one year of completing the program. Visit www.reca.ca for information on licensing requirements.
