Real Estate Brokers Program

Effective March 1, 2012, the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA) made changes to the Real Estate Brokers Program which is the educational requirement for a broker and associate broker licence.

Program Description

The purpose of the Real Estate Brokers Program is to promote the development of competent and ethical real estate brokers and associate brokers. A real estate broker is responsible for the following:

  • Actions of anyone employed by the brokerage he or she is licensed to operate whether in residential, commercial, property management or rural (farm, ranch, and acreage) real estate
  • Planning and coordination of the real estate brokerage
  • Operation of the real estate brokerage within the legislative framework
The Real Estate Brokers Program contains some material that is no longer up to date. In the past, AREA has developed and delivered this program on behalf of the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA) although RECA has always approved the content.

Currently the Real Estate Brokers Program is in transition and the development and delivery is moving from AREA to RECA. As the transition proceeds, RECA will revise and enrich the current content.

Prerequisites

Any real estate industry member applying to the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA) for a broker or associate broker licence must have documented two years of licensed experience as a real estate associate within five years preceding the application for the licence.
