Becoming a Real Estate Associate

 
To become a real estate associate in Alberta, you must:

Step 1: Complete the Real Estate Associates Program (REAP)*.

Step 2:
A) If you are completing Phase 2: Fundamentals of Real Estate through AREA, you must complete the Understanding Designated Agency and Transaction Brokerage course offered through RECA.
B) If you are registered in Fundamentals of Real Estate through RECA, you are not required to complete the Understanding Designated Agency and Transaction Brokerage course.

Step 3: Secure a job with an Alberta real estate brokerage.

Step 4: Submit an application for licensing (through your broker) to the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA). A criminal record check is also required. Once your application is approved, you will be licensed to practice real estate as an associate in Alberta.
 
*Individuals wishing to conduct only property management activities are required to complete AREA or RECA's Fundamentals of Real Estate in REAP and the Introduction to a Career in Property Management offered through RECA. Those wishing to be a real estate associate but not conduct property management activities do not need to complete the Introduction to a Career in Property Management.
 
Please note: You MUST apply for your licence within ONE YEAR of completing the Real Estate Associates Program.
