Become a REALTOR®

*Current AREA students – Information for Learners

REALTORS® are licensed real estate industry professionals who agree to uphold a common Code of Ethics and Standards of Business Practice, and are subject to the rules and regulations of the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA). Most real estate industry professionals in Alberta choose to become REALTORS®.

To become a REALTOR® in Alberta, you must first become a licensed real estate professional by:

  • Completing the Real Estate Associates Program (REAP) through the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA);
  • Joining an Alberta real estate brokerage; and
  • Submitting an application for licensing (through your broker) to the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA), the body that governs the real estate profession in Alberta. A criminal record check is also required. Once RECA approves your application, you will be licensed to practice real estate as an associate in Alberta.

Once you have been licensed, becoming a REALTOR® requires joining your local real estate board, and, by extension, the Alberta Real Estate Association (AREA) and the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA). Your membership fee for all three groups is payable to your local real estate board on a yearly basis.

Currently Practicing Real Estate Elsewhere?

If you practice real estate in other parts of Canada or the US and you want to practice in Alberta, you may be eligible under the license reciprocity provisions of the Real Estate Council of Alberta. The Council has agreements with a number of provinces and states to recognize the occupational standards of other jurisdictions. Individuals who qualify may be eligible to practice real estate in Alberta without additional educational requirements. Contact info@reca.ca for more information.

Become a Real Estate Broker

Any real estate industry member applying to the Real Estate Council of Alberta for a broker or associate broker license must have documented two years of licensed experience as a real estate associate within five years preceding the application for the license.

To become a real estate broker or associate broker in Alberta, you must enrol in the Real Estate Brokers Program through the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA), ensuring that all prerequisites have been completed.
