Selection Criteria
The Al Larson Memorial Scholarships are awarded based on a combination of the applicant's performance in academics and extra-curricular activities in his/her high school years. Al Larson's commitment to both his industry and community inspired the benchmarks for this scholarship awarded by the Alberta Real Estate Association. The Selection Committee looks to award candidates with accomplishments in a broad range of activities in their high school years that extend further than academics. For example:

  • Fine arts;
  • Athletics;
  • Charitable works; and
  • Volunteerism within the school community and the wider community.
More specific information on selection criteria is available in each application below.

AREA must receive applications no later than October 15 in the year of application. Adjudication of all completed applications by the Selection Committee will take place in November with the two successful recipients notified in December. The decision made by the Selection Committee is final. Only complete applications will be accepted.

Note: Due to the high volume of applications typically received, only the two successful recipients will be notified.

History
Al Larson dedicated 41 continuous years to the real estate industry, both as a REALTOR® and as an administrator. He was a past president of AREA and an honourary life member of both AREA and the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA). The Edmonton, Calgary, and Alberta West real estate boards also granted Al honourary life memberships.

In 1976, he was appointed executive vice president of AREA, a position he held until his retirement in 1990. Al Larson passed away suddenly while at a CREA conference in October 1991.

Al never looked for public recognition. His generous contribution of time and energy to the real estate industry was always behind the scenes. Highly respected by REALTORS® and executive officers across Canada, his statesmanship and outstanding leadership benefited organized real estate at all levels. Outside of real estate, Al was a true family man and contributor to his community.

These scholarships are a tribute to Al's love for the real estate industry, his community, and his family and friends.
